Jaguars place LT Branden Albert on reserve/retired list

Branden Albert wants to return to Jaguars

"What about him?" was Coughlin's initial reply when asked about Albert following today's Jaguars-Patriots practice. It appears Albert has changed his mind once again in a rollercoaster of an offseason that has to leave the Jags wondering.

The Jaguars acquired Albert in a trade with the Dolphins in March.

On July 31, Albert abruptly announced his retirement only three days into the Jaguars training camping. He signed a five-year, $47 million deal with the Dolphins in 2014 after six seasons with the Chiefs. None of that money was guaranteed, which is why he wanted a new contract.

On an off day July 30 Albert talked with a teammate about the upcoming 2017 season, but the next day arrived at camp and told Doug Marrone the head coach that he chose to retire. Per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, Albert met with the Jaguars over the weekend.

Given that Albert is also scheduled to make $8.9 million in 2017, the total sum of bonus money and salary was likely too much to walk away from.

In mid-June Albert did not take part in a mandatory minicamp of three days held by the team, but reported with the other veterans for Jacksonville to training camp July 26.

Albert hasn't played a full season since 2011 when he was with Kansas City, who selected him 15th overall in 2008.

This has to come as a shock to the Jaguars, who were preparing to potentially start rookie second-round pick Cam Robinson at left tackle following Albert's retirement.

Albert helped the Dolphins rush for 1,824 yards and allowed just four sacks in 13 games a year ago, despite playing with a ligament tear in his wrist for the second half of the season.
