Donald Trump retweets report based on anonymous United States intel sources

In that poll, a new high of 66 percent of Americans were found to believe North Korea posed a "serious threat" to the United States, though 4 out of 10 said they did not trust President Trump to handle the issue "at all". "They will be met with the fire and the fury like the world has never seen".

"He has been very threatening - beyond a normal statement", Mr. Trump said of North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

USA officials believe North Korea now has the capabilities to put a nuclear weapon on a missile, NBC News learned Tuesday.

That came a day after China and Russian Federation joined with the United States in a unanimous U.N. Security Council vote approving the toughest economic sanctions yet against the increasingly isolated regime.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Monday at a regional security forum in Manila the US government is willing to talk with North Korea, but only if it halts its missile tests. The strongest United Nations sanctions in a generation may still prove no match for North Korea's relentless nuclear weapons ambitions.

The move came in response to North Korea's latest missile launches in July, which it, as well as South Korea and the U.S., claimed were intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests.

Under the 2012 agreement with the US, South Korea is now allowed to develop missiles with a range of up to 800km (497 miles) and a payload of 500kg, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI).

This photo, released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency on July 29, 2017, shows an intercontinental ballistic missile being launched on the night of July 28.

The frightening claims were made in the Washington Post, citing a confidential assessment by the US Defense Intelligence Agency.

North Korea has made no secret of its plans to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States and has ignored worldwide calls to halt its nuclear and missile programmes. "We must be tough & decisive!"

"The nation's state-run news agency responded that "(North Korea) will make the US pay dearly for all the heinous crimes it commits against the state and people of this country".

U.S. stocks fell after Mr Trump's comment, with the S&P 500 falling to a session low.

Despite the United States' insistence that North Korea halt its missile tests, US spy agencies detected the rogue communist regime loading two anti-ship cruise missiles on a patrol boat on the country's east coast just days ago.
