SoftBank Q1 operating profit jumps 50.1% after inclusion of Vision Fund

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said he is interested in investing in Uber, but added that Uber's biggest US rival also has potential.

"We are interested in discussing with Uber, we are also interested in discussing with Lyft, we have not decided which way", Reuters quoted him as telling reporters and analysts on Monday. after the company announced its quarterly results.

Mr Son said: "We are interested in discussing with Uber".

Japanese tech giant SoftBank wants a piece of the US ride sharing market.

The idea of a merger was ruled out by United States regulators in 2014 under the Obama administration but with the new Trump administration in place, preliminary discussions began again earlier this year.

SoftBank boss Masayoshi Son has returned to discussions on merging Sprint with T-Mobile US, controlled by Deutsche Telekom. However, Son explained that he sees ride-sharing as a key global industry that Softbank can ill-afford to miss out on.

The Japanese conglomerate also logged gains from its Yahoo Japan business, but they were offset by sluggish domestic telecom operations and losses at British iPhone chip designer ARM Holdings, which SoftBank bought past year.

"The autonomous vehicle is definitely coming, and when that stage comes, this ride-share business becomes even more important", Son added.
