Venkaiah Naidu elected as India's next Vice President

BJP MP's Bill seeking to impart Hindu religious education in educational institutions to be introduced in Lok Sabha

Prime minister Narendra Modi will address the Parliament members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday, ahead of the vice-president's election on Saturday.

Former governor and Opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi:Congratulations to Mr. Naidu. 11 votes were declared invalid by the Returning Officer.

The BJD, which has 28 members in Parliament, and the JD (U) with 12 MPs had switched over to the opposition camp after supporting the NDA in the presidential poll.

The voting began at 10 am Saturday and ended at 5 pm this evening.

While his victory was nearly assured, Naidu's elevation as the Vice-President and ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, comes amid changing dynamics for the BJP in the Upper House. "As a rising nation, we have the onerous responsibility of overcoming poverty, illiteracy, social and gender discrimination, corruption and debasement of politics", he said. I wish him all the best in his new office of Vice-President.

He has handled key organisational assignments in the BJP and became its President in 2002.

The electoral college that votes for the vice-president, who is also the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, has 543 elected and two nominated members of the Lok Sabha, besides the 233 elected members and 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.

"The Rajya Sabha has a number of political heavyweights - P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Digvijay Singh, Kapil Sibal etc., in the Congress; Ram Gopal Yadav in SP; Mayawati in BSP, etc". She said the position of the Vice President has the crucial challenge of assuming a non partisan role in running the Rajya Sabha, which acts as a store house of wisdom and sage advice for the government. However, BJP leaders are hopeful of crossing the 500 mark.

Mukherjee in a tweet posted an official statement congratulating Naidu for his win and blessed him for the same.

He fit the bill, hailing from the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

Once an L K Advani protege, Naidu vigorously backed Modi for the Prime Minister's post before the 2014 elections.

Known for coining witty acronyms, Naidu did so recently with the initials of APJ Abdul Kalam when he said APJAK stands for "Anything is possible with Just Attitude and Karma".

His skills made the most of him and he fought his first election to victory from Udayagiri constituency in the 1978 Andhra Pradesh assembly election.

As the Rural Development Minister in the Vajpayee government, Naidu pushed several reforms, including the "Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana".

In the 545-member Lok Sabha, the BJP has 281 members.
