Two men wanted for Chicago murder taken into custody in California

Oxford college treasurer and US academic arrested in connection with Chicago murder

Wyndham Lathem, an associate professor of microbiology-immunology, surrendered to authorities in Oakland on Friday, and Andrew Warren, who works in an administrative capacity at Oxford, was arrested in San Francisco, the Chicago Tribune reported. Warren has been suspended from his post as the senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Britain's Oxford Mail reports.

Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Frank Conroy said Saturday that fast-paced surrender negotiations through an attorney began late Friday afternoon and that by evening, Wyndham Lathem arrived by vehicle at the courthouse.

Before his arrest, Lathem had sent a video message to friends and family apologizing "for involvement in murder of Trenton Cornell", tweeted Anthony Guglielmi, chief communications officer for the Chicago Police Department.

"We are also thankful both men are safely in custody and this did not end in further tragedy", the statement said.

Police have identified Lathem, 42, as well as Andrew Warren, 56, an Oxford employee, as suspects in the killing.

Amanda Knox Says Michelle Carter Needs Sympathy After 'Wrongful Conviction'
Carter's case has drawn controversy because many legal scholars don't believe her actions rose to the level of causation. Knox said that "by holding her accountable for Roy's death, we increase the tally of victims in this case".

"We were not in contact with them directly", during the negotiations, he said. It was not immediately clear if he if he knew either Mr. Lathem or their alleged victim prior to last week's fatal stabbing. Both Lathem and Warren are being held on no bond status. At the city's public library, one of the men made a $1,000 donation in Cornell-Duranleau's name.

In a weird twist, police said that on the day of the slaying, but before the body had been discovered, Lathem and Warren drove about 80 miles (128 kilometers) northwest to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where one of them made a $1,000 cash donation to the public library there in Cornell-Duranleau's name. They are not sure how Cornell-Duranleau or Lathem knew Warren, or if Warren knew them before he arrived in the United States.

Officials have not disclosed the connection between the two suspects or their relationship with the victim.

The pair allegedly stabbed Cornell-Duranleau multiple times, leaving him for authorities to find on the 10th floor apartment 15 hours later, according to arrest warrants.
