Mueller using grand jury in DC as part of Russian Federation probe

President Donald Trump told a rally in Huntington, W.Va., that the only reason why Democrats talk about "the totally made up Russian Federation story" is because they lack vision. News agency Reuters has reported that the special prosecutor, Robert Mueller has convened a #grand jury to investigate the interaction of #trump's team with the Russians.

The move would give Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, broad authority to subpoena documents and compel witnesses to testify under oath.

We may be a long way from that, and, as in the Clinton e-mail case, they might not come at all. Prosecutors do not seek the assistance of the grand jury's subpoena power, and do not contemplate presenting evidence to a grand jury, unless they see a realistic possibility of filing criminal charges.

Gingrich wildly praised Mueller earlier this year after his appointment as special counsel, calling him a "superb choice" with an "impeccable" reputation for honesty and integrity.

One America's Eric Solomon has more on the president's speech.

The President offered a political argument - not a legal one - for why the Russian Federation story was "a total fabrication" on a day of dizzying revelations about the probe, that heaped fresh pressure on his beleaguered White House.

John Dowd, an outside lawyer for Mr Trump, said he hasn't received any communication from a grand jury and also said, "President Trump is not under investigation". "In short order, probably people who are in the administration or former members of the administration or former members of the campaign will be getting subpoenas to testify and provide documents", he said.

Spokeswoman: Trump 'joking' when he told police to be 'rough' on suspects
Alan Futerfas, Donald Trump Jr's attorney, had "no comment" when reached Monday night by ABC News. The New York Times was the first to report the meeting.

Another CNN legal commentator, former Watergate prosecutor Richard Ben-Veniste, said, "It is not at all surprising that we have reached a point involving a grand jury". They are denying the American people who put him here.

Wrote comedian George Wallace, "This is gonna be an unbelievable grand jury, believe me".

"The White House favours anything that accelerates the conclusion of his work fairly. As we've said in the past, we're committed to cooperating fully with Mr. Mueller".

Legal experts said the use of a grand jury shows that the federal Russia probe has now gone far beyond the investigation of Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, who misled colleagues about his discussions with the Russian ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, before Trump's inauguration. At the same time, several Republicans in the US Senate are reportedly filing legislation meant to prevent Trump (and/or future Presidents) from being able to fire a Special Counsel established by the Department of Justice without judicial review.

"You don't impanel a grand jury if you only have smoke".

Having spent many years in law enforcement, majority as a prosecutor, I can attest that criminal investigators are presumptuous. "I just hope that if the police ever do arrest him they protect his head when they put him in the auto". Nevertheless, I believe it is secondary - decidedly so - in this case.
