Wayde van Niekerk ready for challenge of being the next Bolt

Meet the world's fastest man this year - and it's not Usain Bolt

The 35-year-old claims he feels back to his 100m heyday when he won Olympic and world titles in 2004 and 2005, a time predating both Bolt's emergence and his own two doping bans.

Yet he has lost eight out of nine times to Bolt over 100m while, similarly, Yohan Blake, second fastest in the world this year at 9.90 seconds, has lost five out of six completed races over the distance to his training partner.

There had been plenty of hype about a Bolt versus De Grasse showdown at the world championships, which McMillan said has been wearing on the young Canadian sprinter.

The Canadian's injury definitely comes as a big boost to Bolt, who will be competing in the 100m for one last time at the London meet before retiring from the sport he has dominated for almost a decade.

It all left Bolt saying on Tuesday that he had been "disrespected" by an athlete that he had previously praised and while he did not name De Grasse, the widespread assumption was that it was De Grasse who had incurred his wrath.

Bolt was speaking in London ahead of tomorrow's 100m heats and Saturday's semi-final and final as he aims to defend his world title from Beijing.

"I'm not going down that road", Bolt said.

"I hope that he takes heed, takes his time to heal and hopefully everything goes smoothly so that he can get back on track next season".

North Korea threatened the US with nuclear retaliation should North Korean President Kim Jong Un's regime be threatened .

But for now, Canada still has a very strong team at the World Championships.

But that mutual respect has turned to animosity - a war of words of sorts between the pair when De Grasse's coach, Stuart McMillan, accused Bolt of getting his athlete kicked out of the 100m race at the recent Diamond League meeting in Monaco.

Bolt, who turns 31 later this month, said earlier this week he was looking forward to a new chapter.

The fastest man this year is Christian Coleman.

The 30-year-old will leave a huge gap for track and field to fill, Bolt's startling on-track achievements having been accompanied by a charismatic yet humble personality that has never ceased to draw attention for all the right reasons.

Former 1500m world champion and BBC Sport commentator Steve Cram has stated that Usain Bolt would not have given this field a second thought two or three years ago.

"It gives me a lot of excitement to see what lies in store for me, but at the same time, I know there's a lot of responsibility for me to go out there and work for where I want to be".
