China reportedly calls in S. Korean envoy in protest over THAAD deployment

North Korea threatened the US with nuclear retaliation should North Korean President Kim Jong Un's regime be threatened.

The U.S. military has conducted a successful test of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense over Alaska after threats from North Korea that its intercontinental ballistic missiles are capable of reaching the state.

Kong Xuanyou, assistant minister at the Chinese foreign ministry, brought in Ambassador Kim Jang-soo on Saturday, right after President Moon Jae-in ordered the deployment of an additional four THAAD launchers in response to North Korea's latest missile provocation, the JoongAng Ilbo reported, citing multiple diplomatic sources.

An ejection test examines a missile's "cold-launch system", which uses high pressure steam to propel a missile out of the launch canister into the air before its engines ignite.

Late Friday night, the North test-fired what it later claimed to be a second and improved intercontinental ballistic missile, drawing strong condemnation for violating multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions.

The missile launch was intended as a "stern warning" that the United States would not be safe from destruction if it tries to attack, the North's official KCNA news agency said.

According to CNN, two defence officials said that a North Korean Romeo-class submarine participated in "unusual deployment activity" earlier this month that appeared to be not part of a training exercise. During the July 30 test, a THAAD weapon system located at Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska in Kodiak, detected a medium-range ballistic missile target air-launched by a C-17 over the Pacific Ocean.

Lockheed Martin Corp, contractor for the THAAD system, said it can intercept incoming missiles both inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere.

The US military this year began deploying THAAD to South Korea, a move that infuriated China, which has argued the deployment would further destabilize the situation on the Korean peninsula.

"We will handle North Korea", Trump told reporters.
