Top Lashkar terrorist Abu Dujana killed in encounter with security forces in J&K

■ Junaid Mattoo, Lashkar-eiTaiba: One of the top Lashkar commander, Mattoo and his accomplice Muzamil were killed in an encounter with security forces in Arwani village of Bijbihara in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on 16 June this year.

The LeT's Kashmir chief, Abu Dujana the most wanted militant commander in the state, was wanted in over three dozen attacks on security forces and civilians and carried a reward of Rs. 15 lakhs.

Security forces hunted him down, working on inputs of these visits, intelligence officials said today.

Abu Dujana was wanted in many militancy-related attacks on security forces and political workers in south Kashmir.

According to police, Dujana spearheaded LeT in south Kashmir after killing of another senior commander Abu Qasim in October 2015.

Though killings of foreign militants hardly trigger large protests in the Valley, Dujana's encounter did.

In recent years, Kashmiris, mainly youths, have displayed open solidarity with anti-India rebels and sought to protect them by engaging troops in street clashes during military operations against the militants.

Dujana's movements were said to have been restricted due to his injuries, which he suffered from a previous confrontation with security forces.

While the security forces have achieved a big success, two terrorists have been killed and the search for the third terrorist is still on.

On June 1, the Army released a list of top 12 militants active mainly in Jammu and Kashmir's southern districts, falling in two categories of "A" and 'A++' and belonging to the Hizb-ul-Mujahedin (HM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM).

The police and other security forces fired bullets, pellet shotguns and teargas and pepper canisters to quell the stone-pelting mobs, witnesses said. Similarly in March previous year, Abu Dujana and four other terrorists managed to flee from the cordon as local residents allegedly diverted the attention of security forces by pelting stones at them.
