Centre condemns Mehbooba Mufti's remark, says 'Tricolour is sacrosanct'

Mehbooba Mufti Kashmir National Flag in Kashmir Jammu and Kashmir Supreme Court President of India Peoples Democratic Party

The National Panthers Party (NPP) on Saturday said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's remark on the Indian flag is unacceptable and amounts to violation of the Indian Constitution.

"The people in India have to understand that the biggest contribution of the people of Kashmir at the time of partition was that Kashmir defied the two-nation theory and aligned with India", Mehbooba said but expressed dismay over the way New Delhi and Kashmiri politicians had toyed with the special provisions in the Constitution of India for the State.

She also praised the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "man of the moment", who, as she believes, can be the true harbinger of peace and stability in the Valley.

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister also spoke on issues like Article 35-A, which gives special status for Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370, and said efforts should be made that no one tinkers with it. "She appreciated his leadership and hoped that Prime Minister Modi, with his attitude, will find a solution to the Kashmir problem", he said. "We have a new challenge of taking the people out of difficulties", she said. "Her entire votebank is in the south of Kashmir", Saihgal said. "It will fly high in J&K as much as it does in any other state of the Indian Union", Singh added.

"There is an emotional leak with respect to Kashmir but there are people in the country who are concerned about us". "I appeal to the Centre to revive the Lahore Declaration so we can live peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir", she said, referring to the bilateral agreement between India and Pakistan signed in 1999. Responding to the charges of smuggling of drugs via trade from the neighbouring country, Mufti said, "Trade routes with Pakistan shouldn't be blocked, instead there should be crack down on drugs and cannabis which are smuggled from there".

On Congress leader and former minister Mani Shankar Aiyar's question that the problem in Jammu and Kashmir government was BJP and not her, she said, "Together with BJP, we can make history". "Unfortunately, with the passage of time something happened somewhere that both sides started doing dishonesty".

"To me, India is Indira Gandhi". "I want to see that India which accepted us on our conditions". Maybe some people won't like it but she was the India. "And there has to be a way to work together and take Kashmir out of the mess", she said while asking the PM to help in resolving the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Citing the Lahore declaration in which Pakistan had assured that it will not allow its land to be used against anti-India activities, Mehbooba said, "We have to revive that... in spite of Kargil and attack on the Parliament house..."
