U.S. imposes new sanctions targeting Iran's ballistic missile program

The sanctions come a day after Iran successfully launched its most advanced satellite-carrying rocket into space, in what was a major advancement for the country's space programme.

In addition, foreign financial institutions that facilitate significant transactions for, or persons that provide material or certain other support to, the entities designated today risk exposure to sanctions that could sever their access to the USA financial system or block their property and interests in property under the U.S. jurisdiction.

USA military officials say they anticipated Thursday's launch.

Mnuchin said the United States will continue to counter Iran's ballistic missile program.

According to Iranian state television, the rocket launched into space Thursday can carry a 550-pound payload.

President needs to 'step back' on Mueller: Senator Collins
Using official powers for corrupt purposes, such as impeding or obstructing an investigation, can constitute a crime. He'll need help from Rosenstein, the Justice Department's No. 2, who is the special counsel's immediate supervisor.

"Iran - unlike the USA - has complied in good faith with the letter AND spirit of (the nuclear deal)". Officials from US Strategic Command are now claiming that the rocket failed, and might conceivably have blown up before it reached space.

"The U.S. government will continue to aggressively counter Iran's ballistic missile-related activity, whether it be a provocative space launch, its development of threatening ballistic-missile systems, or likely support to Yemeni Huthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

While the language in the resolution "call upon" Iran not to develop ballistic missiles, "we would consider that a violation of UNSCR 2231", Nauert said.

Each of the six entities is responsible for developing, manufacturing or producing components that can be used in ballistic missiles or launchers, according to OFAC. According to the AP sources, the USA has so far encountered resistance in this regard as it has not given convincing evidence of prohibited activity at Iran's military facilities, which could be used by the IAEA to justify any inspection demand.

He once again criticized the measures and ratifications of the US Congress and administration against Iran, particularly since the inauguration of President Donald Trump in January, and said as repeatedly confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Tehran has lived up to its commitments under the JCPOA.
