Orlando City Shells Out to Acquire Sporting Kansas City's Dom Dwyer
Hundreds of fans went to greet the Lions' newest player at Orlando International Airport, forming a massive crowd that held signs chanted and threw scarves around his neck as he walked out of Terminal A just around 9:30 p.m., seven hours after news broke of his blockbuster trade from Sporting Kansas City.
"When the story was released that supposedly we weren't getting anywhere, we were still 17 or 18 months out from his deal being done", Vermes told reporters on Tuesday. That variation of the trade would have involved Orlando City acquiring the top allocation spot from the Columbus Crew, then shipping it to Sporting KC.
The husband of elite U.S. Women's Program and Kansas City FC forward Sydney Leroux, Dwyer made his worldwide debut with the USMNT this year after obtaining his American citizenship. He ranks second on the team with five goals this season, and he's scored 57 goals in 128 games during his MLS career.
"Trade" is in quotes here because KC's return on the deal is a hilarious combination of general allocation money, targeted allocation money, and future allocation money (don't ask; alternately, look here if you want to stare into the unknown), totaling $1.6 million all together.
Leroux plays for FC Kansas City and the two share a son, Cassius.
BBC women journalists want wage reform now - not in 2020
That we find ourselves, 47 years after the Equal Pay Act was passed, with persistent pay inequality is appalling . A BBC spokesman reiterated that "significant changes" had been made but they recognised that more had to be done.
Dwyer, drafted in 2012, has scored 66 goals in 149 appearance for Kansas City, but if he was going to leave, it makes sense that he would go to Orlando.
MLS says the previous record was Orlando's trade of Kevin Molino to Minnesota United for $650,000 in allocation money.
"Dom is a fantastic player who recently gave us a glimpse of what he is capable of with the USA men's national team and will keep doing so with the club and at the MLS All-Star game next week". He also attended the nearby University of South Florida after transferring from a junior college following his arrival in the United States from England.
Dwyer was formally introduced by the team at a news conference on Wednesday.
Could Leroux follow Dwyer to Orlando?
