Army Tank On JNU Campus Soon? If Vice-Chancellor Gets His Way

Tiranga March on the occasion of 18th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas was organised at JNU campus

"I would like to request Gen V K Singh and Dharmendra Pradhanji to help us procure an army tank so that we can display it in a prominent place in JNU", Kumar said.

The request was made during Kargil Vijay Diwas, part of the HRD ministry's Vijay Veerta Abhiyan celebrations on the campus on Sunday, 23 July, reported the Times of India. "Presence of an Army tank will constantly remind students of great sacrifice and valor of Indian Army and defence forces", said Kumar. Meanwhile, Pradhan said that the Army was not undermined in any other country like it has been in India.

"The programme was jointly organised with the Veterans India. We should understand that if we are united, we can not be defeated", reported TOI and that the Indian Army had the "best record" on human rights across the world.

The Tiranga March started from JNU's main gate and went on till the Convention Centre where more than two thousand members of the JNU community carried the 2,200-feet long Tricolour for almost two kilometres upto the Convention Centre. Retired major general G D Bakshi and cricketer Gautam Gambhir were also present.

The JNU Teachers' Association also came out with a scathing statement, reminding the VC of his primary responsibility and how he has failed in it. JNUTA said it is "amused by the JNU VC's earnest desire that a tank be rolled onto JNU campus". "JNU is always making headlines. And if they don't, we will force them to love it". "And if they don't, we will force them to love it".

Addressing the gathering, which included family members of veterans and martyrs, Gautam Gambhir touched upon the freedom of speech debate that had engulfed JNU previous year. "One is the respect for the tri-colour", Gambhir added. "But I am happy that under the current VC, the university has installed the Wall of Heroes and organised this Tiranga March where slogans of Bharat Mata ki Jai reverberated", Pradhan told the Indian Express. People who stay in extreme conditions and risk their lives should be given all the rights to take extreme decisions...

The Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have criticised the demand as "bizarre" and "shocking".
